Home Learning
Our approach to home learning
We value our partnership working with you and the learning experiences that you provide your children. Your children work extremely hard at school, and we are keen to ensure that the homework set actively contributes to their learning, while allowing them time to play, spend time with their families and to take part in extra-curricular activities.
As a result of the findings from the Sutton Trust research, we have moved away from routine tasks, such as completing worksheets, and we have placed a greater emphasis on daily reading practise and/or activities. This could take the form of the parent reading to the child, the child reading to the parent, the child reading to a sibling and some time spent silent reading.
There will also be an expectation that times tables will be learnt, practised and embedded. The amount of learning and practise required will vary from child to child, but tables remain a fundamental building block for progress in mathematics, hence the emphasis placed on them. Children will also to carry out online mathematics activities to support and extend their learning.
As a result of the increase in emphasis placed on spelling, we have changed the way that we teach the children, no longer sending lists of words home to learn. Spelling is explicitly taught by the Class Teacher, and monitored through the children’s writing, ensuring that the spellings learnt are properly embedded.
Curriculum information is provided on each year group's Google Classroom giving you the opportunity to discuss and/or investigate these topics with your child to support and extend their learning.
